Unaccustomed Earth is the second short story collection by critically acclaimed Bengali-American author Jhumpa Lahiri. The eight short stories follow a Bengali-American family through several cities across the world. He wants Ruma to experience the kind of freedom he now has: Ruma is on the fence about restarting her legal career; her white, American husband, Adam, does not think she needs to work, and he puts in extra time so that she can stay at home.
She is heavily pregnant too—now is not the best time to resume a stressful career. Ruma faces the conflict of wanting to bring her father closer to her family, a Bengalese norm, and wanting independence from her family, which is more of an American invention.
The story ends with the father leaving Ruma and a crying Akash to travel the world with his new girlfriend. Usha is a young girl living in Boston with her very traditional mother, Boudi. The young man is homesick and considers dropping out of school to return to Calcutta.
Usha bonds with him, and Boudi is love-stricken. She and her mother end up inviting him to their house every day to feed him. But by the end, Pranab marries an American woman named Deborah. They divorce twenty-three years later. Usha learns that her mother loved Pranab decades after the fact and only after a man she wanted to marry had rejected her. When Megan spots a burn in her dress, they agree that Amit must stand by Megan at all times to cover up the frayed fabric.
Amit remembers his time at this old boarding school, Langford Academy. A very drunk Amit drifts away from the party, intending to phone home to their female children, but ends up returning to the hotel to sleep. Megan gives him the cold shoulder the next morning. As they age, he routinely depends on her for more booze. Offers plot summary and brief analysis of book.
